How to acclimate your new plant

Bringing home a new plant is always exciting. What many people do not realize is that the plant has just been through a journey that can be quite stressful. That is why the first days in your home really matter.

What is acclimation

Acclimation is the process of helping your plant adjust to a new environment. During shipping, plants are often kept in darkness and exposed to changes in temperature and humidity. When they arrive, they need time to settle in.

First steps after unboxing

Start by carefully unboxing your plant as soon as it arrives. Plants should not stay in their packaging longer than necessary.

Place your plant in bright, indirect light. A spot near a window with filtered light is ideal during the first few days. Avoid direct sunlight and sudden temperature changes.

If your plant arrives in a bag

Many small plants are shipped without soil, wrapped in a bag with moist moss or paper to protect the roots.

When you receive a plant like this:

  • Gently remove the wrapping around the roots
  • Rinse the roots lightly if needed
  • Trim any dead, mushy or broken roots with sterilized scissors
  • Place the plant in water temporarily or plant it directly in soil
  • Keep the soil slightly moist during the first days

It is best to pot the plant as soon as possible so it can start adapting to its new environment.

If your plant arrives in soil

If your plant comes in a pot with soil, let it rest for a few days before making any changes.

Check the soil moisture. If it feels dry, water lightly, but avoid overwatering. Give the plant time to recover before repotting.

Common reactions

It is completely normal for your plant to drop a leaf or look slightly droopy at first. This does not mean something is wrong. It is simply part of the adjustment process.

After about a week, most plants have adapted to their new environment. At that point, you can start caring for it as usual and find the best long term placement in your home.

In short

Unpack your plant quickly, give it a calm and bright spot, and adjust your care depending on how it was shipped. A little patience in the beginning makes a big difference for long term growth.
