Alocasia cuprea is a striking species in the Araceae family, native to Borneo, where it grows in the understory of tropical rainforests. It was first documented in the 1850s and gained attention among European plant collectors during the Victorian era for its metallic, almost armor-like leaves—hence the name “cuprea”, meaning copper in Latin.

The cultivar known as ‘Red Secret’ is a horticultural selection bred for its deep, glossy red and bronze hues. This version is not typically found in the wild but was likely developed in nurseries through selective breeding to enhance its dramatic coloration.

The variegated form of 'Red Secret' is an even rarer mutation, characterized by cream, white, or pale yellow sectors or marbling that contrast vividly with the plant’s dark foliage. It likely originated as a spontaneous mutation and has been propagated and stabilized by a handful of growers and collectors. Due to its rarity, slow growth, and unique appearance, it has become highly sought-after in the rare plant community.

Because variegation affects chlorophyll levels, this version of Alocasia cuprea is more delicate and slower growing than the standard form. It is often grown in high-humidity setups such as greenhouse cabinets or terrariums and is usually sold in limited quantities through specialty nurseries or private collectors.
