About
Philodendron rubrijuvenilum 'El Choco' is a beloved collector’s species native to Colombia, admired for its large, velvety green leaves with bright, contrasting veins and deep burgundy undersides. The foliage has a rich, luxurious texture and coloration, especially vibrant in new growth. Though considered rare, it’s surprisingly manageable if given the right environment and consistent care.

Care guide
Care guide
Light
Thrives in bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight can scorch the leaves and dull their vibrant tones.
Watering
Water when the top 2–3 cm (about 1 inch) of soil feels dry. Keep soil evenly moist but avoid soggy conditions.
Humidity
Requires high humidity, ideally above 70 percent, to reach its full potential and maintain leaf health.
Temperature
Best maintained between 18–26 °C (65–79 °F). Keep away from cold drafts and avoid sudden temperature changes.
Soil
Use a loose, well-draining mix. A blend of coco coir, perlite, bark and a bit of sphagnum moss works exceptionally well.
Fertilizing
Feed lightly every two weeks during the growing season. Avoid overfertilizing, especially in dormant periods.
Support
As a climbing species, it benefits greatly from a moss pole or trellis to mimic its natural growth habit.
Repotting
Repot every two years or when roots begin to crowd the pot. Always choose a slightly larger pot with good drainage.
Pests
Can attract thrips, spider mites, or mealybugs, especially in dry conditions. Keep humidity high and inspect regularly.
